The empty passageway in the middle is where the King and Queen walk to lay the ceremonial wreath.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every 4th of May, there is a national moment of silence in the Netherlands from 8 PM to 8:02 PM. For two minutes, the entire country\u00a0comes\u00a0to a standstill. No trains, trams, or buses are left running, television and radio stations end their programming, and everybody stops where they are.<\/p>\n<p>I was with my neighbor Maja in the Dam Square in Amsterdam during those two minutes. To be in a crowd of 20,000 people\u00a0in the\u00a0busiest city\u00a0of the Netherlands, and\u00a0hear not\u00a0even\u00a0a single whisper\u00a0&#8212; that was special. Nobody\u00a0was told what to do.
